Understanding Chord Box Diagrams

Chord box diagrams are used to show where to place your fingers to produce a chord. They also tell you what fingers to use. The hand diagram shows your fingers are numbered 1 to 4. Your index finger is and your little finger is . Horizontal lines represent the guitar strings, 6 (thick) E is on the left and 1 (thin) E is on the right. Vertical lines represent the guitar frets (the metal strips across the fetboard). An above a string tells you to play the string open (without pressing any frets). An above a string tells you not to play that string.
